Advertising”, presented by the American Advertising Federation of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and sponsored by The V.I. Lottery, The Virgin Islands Daily News and Ackley Media Group. The award show recognizing the best in local advertising took place on Saturday at Prior-Jolleck Hall. Reminiscent of Hollywood, attendees entered the walkway to the theatre which was adorned with gold ADDY statuettes, and piped musical classics from Frank Sinatra. Attendees then made their way to the red carpet leading to a large outdoor cocktail area complete with an ADDY backdrop, where AAF paparazzi snapped photos of the night’s glamorous guests. The rhythmic sounds of world renowned jazz musician, Louis Taylor and his band were the main attraction in this area, under several large elegantly lit tents, which housed an impressive lounge area with plush seating and carpeting, along with the food and beverage area with hors douevers and champagne.

The (4) major awards of the night were awarded to the following: The Donald Plantz Award Print – Malinda Media for St. John Magazine Issue Number Five; Best of Television – MLB Creative for The Virgin Islands Lottery “Thousands of Dollars are On The Line”; Radio – Austin Advertising for Guardian Insurance “Even If” Jingle; The Peter DeBlanc Award – MLB Creative for Choice Wireless, Choice-Wireless.com. The big award of the show – The Overall Best of Show for 2011 – went to MLB Creative for The Virgin Islands Lottery, “Thousands of Dollars Are On The Line” Local TV. “This TV spot represents the tradition of the Lottery” said Terri Brown of MLB Creative. “We thank the Lottery for imagining the possibilities of what this spot could be and trusting us to create it.”

Both men were hailed as pioneers and visionaries for their contributions within advertising and beyond, by ADDY Master of Ceremonies and AAF USVI President Kevin Hughes. Ottley, expanded on the need for setting the tone for the next generation, and the importance of giving back to the community which is key in his work and life. Clenance spoke to his contributions and work specifically targeting the young people of the Virgin Islands, through his popular community shows, events and programs. Both men received standing ovations, and were well received by the audience.

“I am definitely pleased with this year’s show, as we have taken this event to another level”, said Kevin Hughes President of the A.A.F. U.S.V.I. “We delivered a high quality, polished show, with lots of deserving winners. However, more importantly we recognized advertising and media greats Athniel “Addie” Ottley and Rashidi Clenance which demonstrates our organization’s continuing commitment to recognizing local trailblazers who through their diverse efforts contribute to advertising, media, and our community.”

The theme of the show the “Magic of Advertising” was cleverly captured throughout the night, by visual and audio representations from the popular Harry Potter films interwoven throughout the show. The show’s theme song “Magic” by B.O.B. opened and closed the show, and got the audience in a magical party mood.

The night came alive with the presentation of the Student Award Gold ADDY Award which went to UVI Student Ad Club President Recaldo Richardson, who invited the entire Student Ad Club on to the stage, where they were recognized and also received a standing ovation, as representatives of the next generation of V.I. advertising leaders.

“The UVI ad club, the students, and the younger generation in general are very important to us as a club, said Lisa Jamil, V.P. AAF USVI. “In fact a portion of the proceed from the ADDY’s will go towards our support of our Internship Program, where the organization assists students with finding meaningful internships and ultimately jobs within their chosen fields of interest. It was a great evening, and I want to thank everyone for attending, everyone had a great time”, said Lisa Jamil, V.P. of the AAF U.S.V.I.

Nationally, the American Advertising Federation has 200 member clubs in 15 districts within the U.S. and the Caribbean. The A.A.F. U.S. Virgin Islands is a part of the 4th District, which also includes Florida.

It’s time again for the ADDY Competition — the world’s largest and most comprehensive advertising competition. The ADDY® Awards represent the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising from media of all types, creative by all sizes and entrants of all levels from anywhere in the world.

Don’t miss your chance to have your hard work and creativity recognized not to mention the bragging rights!
Below are some tips for entering and answers to common questions.

START NOW! It’s Easy!
1.	Visit addycompetition.com
2.	Click on “How to Enter”
3.	Select Link “ Click here to enter the ADDY Awards”
4.	Choose “I am a Professional”
5.	Click “Select” and choose the 3rd drop down menu
6.	Select “AAF – Caribbean”.
7.	Fill in your information on the Entrant Form

*Tip: Be sure to select YES for Member if you are a member in good standing (have renewed since June) or will be sending in your membership check with entries. Becoming a member will reduce your entry fees. If you decide to join as an individual rather than a corporation, you may NOT enter your work under your company’s name, only your own and you are the only one allowed to be listed on the credits. This is not recommended.

NOTE: Fees have gone up slightly. Although a $10 per entry increase, AAF – USVI is absorbing most of this in order to keep entry fees as low as possible for our members. Yea AAF – USVI!

HOW TO ENTER ONLINE
Refer to the ADDY Rules and Categories PDF for a list of categories and definitions. This can be downloaded from addycompetition.com. Please review ALL categories carefully. Even if you are a veteran entrant, categories are updated each year to accommodate new media.

After you decide which category your entry fits in best, complete the entry form. Carefully type and proof the credits and title of your entry. The way you enter it here, is the way it will be entered on your certificate should you win. Do NOT use all caps to enter your information please. Print entry forms after entering. *Tip: Format the page set up so that it prints on one page rather than two.

Note: Each entry can only be entered one time unless it is an element of a campaign. Then it may be entered by itself in the appropriate category and with the campaign.

All work entered must be NEW creative and published between the dates of January 1, 2010-December 31, 2010.

You can close and make changes as often as you want until the close of entries on February 2nd at midnight. When you are finished with all entries, review and print Manifest form.

Physical Entries
After you complete the entries online and print Entry forms, you must cut the Entry forms and adhere the category/entry number strip to the back of the physical entry. Entries must be placed in a CLEAR plastic envelope with the entry form with the creative showing to the outside. Included in the envelope must be an accompanying CD with a PDF of the physical entry with an entry strip taped to the CD or written on it. This is extremely important for winner recognition at the District level.

Do not leave out the PDF – one entry/PDF per CD. This obviously does not apply to radio or TV spots, but make sure to write the entry number on the CD.

OVERSIZED ENTRIES: Do not send entries that are huge like posters. Enter the artwork as a PDF only. Calendars are an exception. Packaging is also an exception.

When you are finished, review the manifest form once again and make sure each entry is there. Remember to place entries in numerical/categorical order and drop off to MLB Creative at 2111 Crystal Gade, St. Thomas (Synagogue Hill) or at Austin Advertising at 19 Estate Thomas in Havensight. A collection point for St. Croix will be announced. A check for the full amount must be with your entries in order to be judged. Also include a separate check for your membership if you have just joined and ensure you have included your membership form with your check.

For further questions, please review addycompetition.com site first and then email Terri@mlbcreative.com.

The winning team claims the proceeds of the bowling pin art auction for their charity.

The event will also feature final bidding in the silent auction of 10 hand painted bowling pins by 10 local artists: David Hill, Tony Romano, John Chinnery, Lucinda O’Connell, W.B. Thompson, Pam Larsen, Aimee Trayser, Lisa Etre, Gregory Samuels and Shari Erickson. Bidding will end at 6:45PM when top bidders will take home their original art pins and the proceeds will go the charity represented by the highest scoring team in the bowling tournament.

The Source online news source is bowling for Rwanda Project as their charity. As Vice President of the charity, and an advocate for children and families, First Lady Cecile deJongh expressed her support for the bowling fundraiser and noted the importance of local sponsorship for humanitarian projects. “Our educational project can use these funds to help support our ongoing fundraising efforts to take Virgin Islands high school students to Rwanda to expose them to life in a country that has been devastated by genocide and disease. First Lady deJongh continued, “This is a great way to raise awareness on initiatives that rely on community support and charitable giving. With 18 local charities participating today, the community has a unique opportunity to donate and help support grass-roots efforts for Virgin Islands-based efforts. The AAF has really done a nice job with this event, and it will be my pleasure to be there.”

First Lady Cecile de Jongh will bowl the first ball, as the first 6 teams begin bowling at 4:00PM. By 7:00PM all 18 teams will have bowled and a winning team awarded the top trophy.
